Sunday 6th December

This week we’ll be concluding our series, looking at the book of Ruth – Loving Kindness in Action.

This week we’ll be looking at ‘Lineage of David’ – God is working his purposes out.

The reading will be Ruth 4:13-22

Song: Glorious light

Like a branch that sprouts
    from a stump,
someone from David’s family
    will someday be king.
The Spirit of the Lord
    will be with him
to give him understanding,
    wisdom, and insight.
He will be powerful,
and he will know
    and honour the Lord.
His greatest joy will be
to obey the Lord. (Isaiah 11 CEV)

But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants for ever; his kingdom will never end.’ (Luke 1:30-33 NIV)

This is a really nice link, as we’re looking at the last part of Ruth an the genealogy which goes from Perez, right down through Boaz, Obed, Jesse and David, then this link as we’re coming up to Christmas, as Jesus was born into this family line.

Family Trees

Take a moment to think of your family tree. Possibly your natural family, possibly those around you who you treat as family. This is just to help focus your mind, as we think about how we live our lives and how we influence those around us. Think about them and pray for them during the week.

We have the benefit of hindsight – we can see how the story of Ruth panned out, and how Jesus came from that family line. Naomi, Ruth and Boaz wouldn’t have known that. But they would have had a hope that something great would come from their family.

You could also thank God for those who were an influence on your life!
