Getting to know God

This week we explore experiencing God in mystery and closeness.

Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord, you his servants;
    praise the name of the Lord.
Let the name of the Lord be praised,
    both now and for evermore.
From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
    the name of the Lord is to be praised.

The Lord is exalted over all the nations,
    his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God,
    the One who sits enthroned on high,
who stoops down to look
    on the heavens and the earth?

He raises the poor from the dust
    and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes,
    with the princes of his people.
He settles the childless woman in her home
    as a happy mother of children.

Praise the Lord.
Psalm 113 (NIV)

How can we describe God?

Have a think, whilst watching the following video clip, about how you think of God. Is He a close God, or just someone staring down from heaven?

It’s very hard to describe God in just one sentence. We’re all at different stages in our walk with Him. As we’re singing these songs and praying and listening to Roger later, maybe just ask God about knowing Him more and having a closer relationship with Him.

As we read in in Psalm 113, it’s talking about the Lord who’s exalted above all the nations and whose enthroned on high, yet He’s stooped down to look on the earth, and He cares about the poor and the needy, and He knows about each one of us. It’s hard to think of Him as being all those things because we only have minds that can think of a small amount. It’s hard to imagine a God who created all the world, who cares about a single person – us – in that world.
