Sunday 21st February

I believe in eternal life

This week we come to the last in our series, looking at ‘The Creed’. It’s been good to stop and remind ourselves what we believe, and the creed sets out the core truths of Christianity – the beliefs that, above all else, should shape the way we live our lives as God’s people.

This week’s creed statement is:

On the third day [Jesus] rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated I believe in… the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Lets start by reminding ourselves of the whole creed by reading this together:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

I don’t know what you think of when you read that last statement in the creed – “I believe in… the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting”. What do you think of when you hear of life everlasting? Is it sitting on clouds and playing harps and singing all day long? Or something like being in the garden of Eden where we can walk around and spend time with God? Or something more like the film Groundhog Day, where every day is exactly the same?

Revelation 21:1-5

Philippians 3:20-21

It’s really hard to imagine what life everlasting and heaven will be like. Here’s a video to watch, which is more about transformation. Whilst watching it, have a think, and thank God for the hope which is to come. Thank God that we will be transformed, and everything will be beyond what we can imagine.
