Friday 26th June – The sower and the seed
Jesus told a lot of stories to people to help them understand about God, heaven and how they should live. These stories are also known as “parables”. He used stories about every day things people would have been used to and would recognise. Jesus knew that most people understand things better with a story.
You can find this story in 3 places in the Bible if you would like to read it:
Matthew chapter 13 verses 1 – 23 (Matthew 13:1-23)
Mark chapter 4 verses 1 – 20 (Mark 4:1-20)
Luke chapter 8 verses 1 – 15 (Luke 8:1-15)
If you prefer, you can watch the story instead:
While Jesus was living on earth, lots of people followed him and listened to him speaking but for many, it did not make any difference in their lives. Just like the seeds in the story!
Jesus still wants us to listen to him today but he doesn’t just want us to hear his words then go back to living as we were before – he wants us to be changed. He wants us to be excited to learn more about him and to tell other people the good news about Jesus.
Why not try an experiment at home
If you can get some seeds – maybe mustard, cress or lettuce that grow quite quickly – try planting them on the different soils that were in the story and see what happens.
Here’s an idea of how you could do it:
If you can’t get any seeds, why not try making a picture or collage with different seeds you can find in your garden or on a walk:
Take some pictures of your creations and send them in so we can see what you have been doing and we will add them to the bottom of this page. They won’t appear straight away – I’ll add them later in the day).
Here’s some pictures we’ve received so far:
